RV Knorr: Floats Galore
Submitted by erehm on Mon, 05/12/2008 - 01:26.
Here's a quick summary of activities on Sunday, 11 May 2008:
- Finished a 15 nm bowtie survey with CTD stations at the vertices.
- Held a one hour science meeting to discuss observations so far. (Look for an upcoming report summarizing this discussion.)
- Using a prediction of Biofloat 48's location, pre-positioned ourselves before surfacing. We were within 6 nm of the float when it surfaced.
- We steamed to Biofloat 48, navigating so it was 100 m abeam of the starboard side, and carried out a CTD cast within sight of the float, sampling chlorophyll, nutrients, oxygen, POC, as well as samples for FlowCAM and flow cytometric analysis. After this, we performed two repeat radiometric casts to 75 m followed by two optics casts to 100 m. The optics casts measured inherent optical properties (a, c, bb), chlorophyll fluorescence, CDOM fluorescence.

- Mounted recovered Biofloat 47 on the aft deck (in sight of GPS and Iridium satellties, and started up a two-day "deck top" test mission to wring it out before deployment next week.
- Recovered one PELAGRA floating sediment trap from its 4-day mission (and readied to collect the remaining four throughout the rest of the night). This one did a dive under the Knorr and came up unscathed.
